Josie: Welcome back to Miami. I think now it’s best to go over to Remy, who for the night I think just dead away sleeps, right?
Kris: Yeah. Uh huh. I think— can I actually do the healing, like, when they get home? Cause one of their things is Frightened, and the other one is Burnt Hand. I feel like the burnt hand is like… wash that off—
Josie: Yeah, those are both—
Kris: Yeah. Those feel like things that like, I’m gonna, you know, put a bandage on my burnt hand and then otherwise sleep that off and hope for good dreams.
Josie: Okay. So yeah, just clear your level 1 harm then.
Kris: Yeah. I think that’s just overnight, you know, hand hurts less and also wakes up to a nice and sunny morning and the nightmares form the shard are no longer plaguing them.
Josie: Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. You were gonna spend some time with Jade.
Kris: Yeah!
Josie: What does that look like?
Kris: What was the previous day? What day of the week was that? That was a Saturday we meet up at the…
Josie: Saturday.
Kris: Yeah, so then—
Josie: Yeah, so it’s Sunday now.
Kris: So this is Sunday, so one, I think Remy wakes up early. It’s like 7am. There is no, no amount of going to sleep late or trying to wake— like, its 7, sun is up, I’m up, and they’re full of energy and they’re like, let’s go. And do you know who else is like that? Small children.
Josie: [laughs]
Kris: So I think because Remy sometimes, like, babysits Isaiah, who is Jade’s son, he’s like seven, I think Remy has a key and so like, to make it so that Jade does not have to deal with a very energetic seven-year-old at like, 7.30 in the morning on a Sunday, Remy goes over there and is just like, ‘Hey. Here’s breakfast, here is like, something for you to do other than bother your sleepy mother. Hi.’ [laughs]
Josie: Aww. That’s really sweet. [laughs]
Kris: Cause Remy does have that energy at this time of day, so it’s like, yeah, let’s go, right? So they’re hanging out, they’re making breakfast. I think Remy is trying to teach Isaiah how to cook as much as you want a seven-year-old to like, handle a stove and stuff. But it’s like, ‘You’re on toast duty. I trust you with this.’
Josie: Isaiah takes the toast duty very well. He likes you a lot. And he feels like he’s doing something and he’s kind of got— he takes the duty part of toast duty very seriously. He’s imagining that he’s got like, an official role as Toast Master.
Kris: He has the butter. The butter knife. It’s very important.
Josie: Yes. He’s the toast expert now.
Kris: Yeah. He’s got like, new combinations of like, jam and peanut butter or something and I’m just like:
Kris (as Remy): This is revolutionary.
Josie: Yes. [laughs]
Kris (as Remy): They’re gonna write books about this.
Josie: I think at some point he asks:
Josie (as Isaiah): Can you sing again? Sing a cooking song. Sing a toast song.
Kris (as Remy): A toast… song… yeah. Okay. [laughs]
Kris: I think it’s just a, uh, extremely like, [sings tunelessly] ‘I am making this up off the cuff… toast…’
Josie: [laughs] But do you inject any of your divine voice into that?
Kris: Ooh.
Josie: Because that’s how you connected with Isaiah during the blackout.
Kris: That’s true. I just don’t— I have— I have no Faith to spend on that, so I can’t right now.
Josie: [laughs]
Kris: I think it’s like a thing where like, you know, you— when you’re like, singing with little kids and being kind of silly and just like, belting it out. Like, you know, it’s like if they had the energy to put into that it would have come out, but instead it’s just like, they like, breathe in to just sing some really wild note and instead just yawn. [laughs]
Josie: [laughs]
Kris: Like:
Kris (as Remy): Oh, it is too early in the morning for that kind of volume. Okay, let’s…
Kris: You know?
Josie: I think a little ways into the song Jade has woken up and she’s very tired and going about getting ready. But at the yawn you hear her laugh a little bit. She’s just kind of quietly doing her thing while she wakes up and is enjoying hearing Isaiah especially enjoy himself. Because he enjoys your singing even though it’s not imbued with divinity as such.
Kris: Yeah. Like, Remy is still a person who was on children’s TV, so knows how to be entertaining for children.
Josie: Mm hmm.
Kris: Right? Like, there’s an element of just like, performance to it that is just like a person thing for them. That is a thing that that person knew how to do.
Josie: Yeah, absolutely. You get to automatically recover two Faith from all this.
Kris: Huzzah. Yeah, I think we all just like eat breakfast and hang out for a bit in the morning.
Josie: Near the end of breakfast, Isaiah gets set up with an iPad to watch cartoons for a little bit.
Kris: [laughs] Yeah.
Josie: Cause that’s kind of his weekend thing as Jade is cleaning up a little bit.
Josie (as Jade): Thanks again. Sorry.
Kris: Oh, for the morn— no, listen, I’m already awake so I might as well, you know? This way I get to eat, make sure he eats, doesn’t bother you. It’s fine.
Josie (as Jade): I do not understand morning people, Remy.
Kris (as Remy): Yeah, yeah. That’s… you know, I get that a lot. Hey, did— is everything— did everything okay with the rental office?
Josie (as Jade): Yeah. I mean, I was able to get a little bit of an advance, but I’m gonna have to DoorDash a bit to make up for it. But it’s covered. It’s covered for this month. It’s good.
Kris (as Remy): You sure?
Josie (as Jade): I don’t need to worry about that anymore. I’m— yeah, I’m sure. Besides, you already do enough with this. I just hope I don’t come across as a bad mom, asking you to keep doing this. [laughs]
Kris (as Remy): Listen. The kid is alive, I mean like, you’re doing— like, alive is bare minimum. He seems pretty happy, so I’m gonna call that a win. You’re talking to someone with like, no children, so like, what am I supposed to judge you on there?
Kris: Just like, shrugs.
Josie (as Jade): I mean, I guess if we look at it like that I’m doing pretty okay.
Kris (as Remy): Exactly. So, if you do start, oof, DoorDashing, let me know. Cause I know the ins and outs of that system pretty well, so…
Kris: Me, Kris, I don’t shit about DoorDash, but like, I imagine there’s like… you know, getting there faster? I don’t know, does that get you more tips? I’m not sure.
Josie: Not… really. [laughs]
Kris: Ugh.
Josie: Like, there’s kind of a minimum tip. People pick from it and tip what you want. There’s no consistency in that job. I’ve done it before, it is not reliable.
Josie (as Jade): Are you— there’s no acting for you? I mean, I guess Miami isn’t the best place for that, but…
Kris (as Remy): I’m, I’m… I haven’t really been, uh… I wasn’t really doing that before I moved here. I didn’t— I didn’t move to Miami to get— I mean, like you said, Miami’s not where you go if you’re trying to get into acting showbiz, anyway, that’s the other side of the country. No, I wasn’t really looking though…
Josie (as Jade): Yeah. I mean, I imagine being on TV that young can kinda sour you on the whole experience, I guess?
Kris (as Remy): [dry laugh] Yeah, something like that. That’s… yeah. Not— it’s— it’s… I’m fine with then being then and doing something else now, you know? Lots of time.
Josie (as Jade): And I mean, as far as I can tell there aren’t really tasteless blogs reporting on your every movement, so that’s an upshot.
Kris (as Remy): [sighs] Yeah, trying to keep it that way.
Kris: [laughs] Has minor flashback to last night, like, ‘Hmm…’
Josie: [laughs]
Kris: It’s only for two seconds. I’m gonna wait until I have reasons to worry about that before I start worrying about it.
Josie (as Jade): Why did you move to Miami? Not that I’m complaining.
Kris (as Remy): Uh… well, um… so, I mean, you…
Josie (as Jade): I mean, I grew up here and I kinda wish I could be anywhere else at this point, but…
Kris (as Remy): Well, one, heat is nice. I’ll say that. The temperature, good. But also, so… I mean, you know… about me. Like, me?
Kris: You know, sort of looks at like— doesn’t wanna say demon cause like, isn’t sure how much Isaiah— children hear so much more than you’d expect, right? [laughs] So I don’t wanna be like, ‘So you remember how I’m a demon?’ Isn’t quite gonna say that. Is like:
Kris (as Remy): You know about me. Um…
Josie: She bites her lip a little bit and nods.
Kris (as Remy): Okay. Um, so turns out Miami’s kind of a hub for… us.
Josie (as Jade): Oh.
Kris (as Remy): Yes.
Josie (as Jade): Okay.
Kris (as Remy): So, uh… that’s… I came here to make some friends. So far, so good.
Josie (as Jade): Given how many churches there are, I guess that’s surprising? Or is it not surprising. I don’t know.
Kris (as Remy): I don’t know why— I don’t know how any of— I was as surprised as you are when someone told me. So uh, I just kinda followed along and yeah, most others I’ve met since being around, so uh… so far that seems to bear out.
Josie (as Jade): Yeah. I mean, if it works. I don’t really know how…
Josie: She kind of gestures at Remy,
Josie (as Jade): Your deal works in that regard.
Kris (as Remy): Your guess is as good as mine, honestly. Seems like everybody’s got a different story, but they all kinda end up in Miami for some reason I don’t understand.
Josie (as Jade): Are you at least happy here?
Josie: She leans a little bit and whispers,
Josie (as Jade): I saw. I gotta imagine this is kind of a step down?
Kris (as Remy): I mean, I’m pretty sure. Just kinda wandering for… oh, I don’t even know how long. A really long time. Just, years. I don’t— I don’t… eons? Milleni… big number. So, it’s nice to have a home. I’ll say that. I can say that with confidence, it is nice to have a home. It’s been a long time.
Josie: She has a look on her face like she has no idea how to process that length of time. [laughs]
Kris: [laughs]
Josie: But she can understand having a place to call home.
Kris (as Remy): Listen, it’s the weekend. Weekends aren’t for thinking about difficult things. Weekends are for… whatever Isaiah is watching. What is that? Like a— is that a talking grape? What is that?
Kris: [laughs] Like, looking over at this iPad that’s like far away and also like, ‘What… what am I seeing?’
Josie (as Jade): Sorry, he ended up on the sensory videos again. I gotta figure out how YouTube works.
Kris (as Remy): [laughs] Okay. Well, I’ll leave you two to do that. I’m gonna go acquaint myself with the city some more.
Josie: So, Remy’s gonna go about their day. Let’s jump back to Julia. Julia wanted to take up investigating the shard while the others recover a little bit. How is she gonna go about doing that?
Minna: Well, presumably not immediately after late-night Waffle House. [laughs] Go to a goddam library?
Josie: That’s fine.
Minna: [laughs] No, I know it’s valid and that’s a thing you could do in this game, I’m just imaging the scenes in movies that always make me angry about research. [laughs]
Josie: [laughs]
Minna: I think she’s—
Fabby: [laughs] Googling ‘Babel’.
Minna: God. [laughs] I can’t rewatch the scene in Twilight where she fucking googles ‘vampires’.
Fabby: Yeah, vampire!
Minna: [laughs]
Josie: [laughs] She types it into her favorite search engine. ‘Vampire’.
Minna: She just types— yeah, the book is worse than the movie even. [laughs]

Josie: I suppose what specifically are you trying to figure out?
Minna: What is a shard?
Josie: What is a shard. Let’s say it’s a four-tick clock. This is a short one.
Minna: Okay.
Josie: Further questions as to what one can do with the shard maybe take a bit longer. But just figuring out what a shard is, that’ll be pretty quick. You’re plumbing your own memories for this.
Minna: Yes.
Josie: So that’s gonna be with your True Name.
Minna: Perfect.
Josie: So, tell the listeners what Julia’s True Name is.
Minna: My True Name is The Hot, Wet Green Smell of Life at the Water’s Edge, Held Close in the Embrace of a Tunnel of Trees.
Josie: That’s beautiful.
Minna: Me and me title-reading voice.
Josie: [laughs]
Minna: That’s a 2. [laughs]
Kris: Why…
Josie: A 2. So it’s one tick. The memory you dredge up is, Julia as Aigron was a fighter, yes? She was out there fighting Heaven?
Minna: So, Julia actually was kind of a hermit during that time. The time of Babel for her was not any kind of a golden age, it was… ‘Oh, if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions.’
Kris: [laughs]
Josie: Yeah.
Minna: Cause urban sprawl is kind of her enemy and that’s kind of what Babel is to some extent.
Josie: Yeah. Cities existed by this point. It was a golden age for some, not so much for others. Demons had basically taken dominion over the Earth at this point, and it varied how good this was for the Earth and all the creatures living on it.
Minna: Yeah, and I mean specifically Julia during the time of atrocities, uh, you know, her mistakes involved unchecked growth and excess. So now she’s seen all this unchecked growth and she’s like, ‘Oh no. I’m done with this, no.’ [laughs]
Josie: Yeah. So, Aigron was kind of doing their own thing during this time. Just ruminating on their mistakes and kinda trying to get back to their roots, heh heh. So when Tabel— Tabel.
Minna: Tabel. [laughs]
Josie: [sighs]
Minna: When the Tower of Babel, or Tabel, if you will… [laughs]
Kris: How the turns have tabeled.
[laughter]
Minna: That’s the description for Julia’s time during— or Aigron’s time during the time of Babel.
Kris: Oh no! [laughs]
Josie: So, the final defeat of the fallen angels was when the forces of Heaven returned and struck down the Tower of Babel. That’s what we saw in the vision from Luz last time.
Minna: Mm hmm.
Josie: And cast everyone except Lucifer and seemingly Remy into the abyss. How did Aigron feel seeing the Tower come down? Was it a relief? Was it just all the bad things you’d predicted would happen coming to fruition? Was it a mix?
Minna: It would have been a mix, but I think there’s something in her that would have almost reveled at it. Like, you don’t… feel good about that level of hurt and pain, but also, you can start from scratch after that. I think there’s something in there that’s like, a seed of what she became.
Josie: Yeah, that makes sense. So, there is this sense of almost relief, catharsis in the midst of the pain.
Minna: Catharsis is such a good word for that.
Josie: Yeah. And that makes Babel a very fraught subject for her.
Minna: Yeah.
Josie: And as you established last time, she doesn’t want it back. But since you were so distant, since you were so introspective…
Minna: Yeah, I don’t know much about shards. [laughs]
Josie: Yeah. You’re not really sure what Babel did. And therefore, not necessarily what a shard can do. But it makes sense that if the pieces are still around, they can be put back together. And that would almost assuredly establish some sort of dominion over the Earth. Because that’s what Babel represented. Lucifer didn’t want it to be that, but that’s kind of what it became. That’s what Abaddon and all the other demons who couldn’t quite hold onto a sense of compassion or care-taking for the humans turned into.
So, the most you get is that putting Babel back together is possible with the shards. And that if someone in particular is trying to do it, that would give them a lot of power. As for further information, you’ll have to finish the clock.
Minna: Yup.
Josie: And I think we’re gonna wrap up with probably Luz checking the subreddit. And there’s a thread on there. It’s a throwaway handle with just Ethan2356789, something like that, and it just says, “Help.” And then an address.
Let’s cut to sunset, the blues and purples making their way through the high-rises of downtown and casting a shadow over La Casita, where you all have met. What do you all do?
Fabby (as Luz): Okay, so are we gonna go from here to there? Are we just— are we staying here? I know we met here, are we staying here, are we gonna go get— go to that place now?
Kris (as Remy): Well, if it’s a call for help it seems like we should go. But first I want to, one second—
Kris: Remy is on their phone, like, putting that address into Google Maps, just to see like, what is that place.
Minna: [laughs]
Fabby: Smart.
Kris: Where are we going? What is this location? Street view, let’s go.
Josie: Isn’t it convenient roleplaying in the modern era?
Kris: Don’t you just love being able to see anywhere in the world from the confines of your home and convenience of your telephone? It’s not a problem at all.
Josie and Minna: [laugh]
Josie: The address you pull up on Google is for the Guiding Hand Church, which is an evangelical church in north Miami Beach.
Kris: Hmm.
Josie: Judging by the picture, it’s a very, um, affluent sort of church. It doesn’t look like a cathedral, it’s basically a big white box with a bunch of windows out front. It looks like a very modern building.
Kris: Big prosperity gospel vibes?
Josie: Extremely prosperity gospel vibes.
Kris: [sighs] [strained] Cool.
Josie: With very like, trimmed and manicured lawn on the rest of the lot it occupies.
Kris: Yeah, Remy sees that and just like, makes a concerned face, turns their phone around to Luz and Julia like:
Kris (as Remy): I don’t know if this is better or worse than I’m worried it is.
Josie: I think Naz leans over the counter and is like:
Josie (as Naz): Well fuck that shit.
Kris (as Remy): Okay. Worse then. Okay.
Minna (as Julia): How long ago was that post?
Josie: At most like 20 minutes before you all got here.
Kris (as Remy): If we go fast, if we go now, maybe whatever he needs help with isn’t too dire?
Minna (as Julia): Yeah, if we leave it it’ll only get worse.
Fabby (as Luz): Yeah. Worst comes to worst, we go there and there’s nothing and we come back. So…
Kris (as Remy): Yeah.
Josie: I think a reply to the thread comes through.
Kris: Ooh.
Josie: And it just says, “East. Ditching phone.”
Kris (as Remy): East? Okay, concerning.
Fabby (as Luz): Okay. Let’s go to the address and walk east, I guess?
Minna (as Julia): Yup.
Kris (as Remy): Yup. I can drive.
Fabby (as Luz): Shoot— yeah, okay, I was gonna ask if we could take, like a rideshare or…
Kris: [laughs] Take the bus.
Minna: I do not think there is good public transport, probably.
Fabby: Yeah, walk, take the bus or a rideshare, but an emergency meeting in moments you probably don’t wanna go any of those. So yes, car. Your car. Let’s go.
Kris: Yep. It’s not a nice car, but…
Josie: Naz says:
Josie (as Naz): If you can make it back here, this’ll be a safe spot.
Kris (as Remy): Thanks.
Fabby (as Luz): Thank you, Naz.
Josie: She winks.
Fabby: Luz winks back.
Josie: [giggles] So Kris, you just said Remy’s car is not a nice car. What kind of car is it?
Kris: I’m picturing a— like a, ‘Oh wow! This thing still works?’ Right? Like…
Josie: Uh huh. [laughs]
Kris: I think it’s a used car that Remy bought when they moved here. Um, it is from maybe— this is 202X, so it’s like from 20-somewhere in the teens, but the earlier end of it. It’s a… sedans are the ones with four doors, right?
Josie: Yeah.
Kris: Okay, great. Yup. It’s like a, you know, thematically similar but legally distinct Toyota Corolla from 2012.
Josie: [laughs] Perfect.
Kris: And there’s like, a bunch of stuff just thrown into the back that Remy, like, either for when they’re delivering stuff and when they’re like doing Uber or something and driving for a rideshare they just throw all that shit in the trunk. So Remy just like, real quick, grabs a bunch of stuff out of the back seat, chucks it in the trunk, hops in and is just like, you know, out of the trunk pulls two water bottles and is like:
Kris (as Remy): Oh yeah, and there’s charging cables in the thing between the seats in case anybody needs to charge their phone on the way.
Kris: [laughs] It’s just like, rote. It is like muscle memory of saying that to people who they’re driving around.
Josie: [laughs]
Fabby: Luz immediately puts in her phone and is like:
Fabby (as Luz): Do you have an aux cord, or…?
Kris (as Remy): I mean that should work as one, it’s plugged into the—
Fabby (as Luz): Okay cool. I’ll just— I have a playlist set up for stuff like this.
Kris: [laughs]
Fabby: She goes to like, her music and puts, like, uh…
Kris: What is the name of this playlist?
Fabby: Hyping Towards Danger Playlist.
[laughter]
Fabby: It has a lot of— I think it has a lot of emo in there, some fast punk, a lot of like fast music. Yeah.
Kris: God, if this is in the future from now, I really hope the song Back on My Bullshit by Magnolia Park is on there, because I feel like that would work real well.
Fabby: Yeah. Perfect. [laughs]
Kris: Remy just sort of like waits for a second, lets the music play for a little bit just to like get a sense of what it is and looks at Luz like:
Kris (as Remy): I appreciate your commitment to… a theme?
Fabby (as Luz): Oh yeah, I mean, it depends on what it was. If we were like, slowly approaching danger I have one that’s all like ballads and more like 80s stuff, but if we’re going towards danger fast, this just seems appropriate.
Kris (as Remy): No, yeah. Yeah. You ever work on soundtrack— wait, okay. We can talk about that later. We gotta go.
Kris: [laughs] Right.
Fabby (as Luz): Okay!
Josie: [laughs]
Kris: Just getting lost in the sauce for a second, like, ‘Do you ever think about doing soundtrack work?’
Minna: [laughs]
Josie: [laughs] So these three ancient beings who participated in the creation of the world pile into a legally distinct Toyota rideshare car with Back on Your Bullshit blaring from inside it and take off towards north Miami. That’s just an image I like.
Fabby: Hell yeah.
Kris: It’s good and fun.
Fabby: That’s the trailer.
Josie: Anything Julia does on the way up?
Minna: I think she’s like… [sighs] I’m still trying to separate my impulses from hers. [laughs]
Josie: [laughs]
Minna: Cause my impulse is to just be googling this church.
Josie: What you find on the church is all the shit you would expect from a church like this, that I won’t enumerate on, just for decency. But one notable thing is that Father John, the person who’s basically in charge, is also apparently on the docket for Miami City Council, along with Wes.
Minna: Huh. Okay.
Fabby: Hmm.
Kris: Hmm… oh boy.
Josie: Like, he just announced it not too long ago. And, you know, all the Christians are happy about that, but no one else is.
Kris: [sarcastic] That sounds great.
Minna: Fantastic.
Josie: So, you are approaching a corner around which lies the Guiding Hand Church, and you can see the red-blue-red-blue of police lights around the corner.
Kris: Oh.
